Clear is Clearly best

If you look at any our fixtures, you will note that they do not have white plastic diffusers over the LEDS. These are generally put on lights for aesthetic reasons. But they ruin the efficiency of the light fixture. It's like putting a light under a bushel basket.

First, these white plastic diffusers block about 20% of the LEDs light.

Second, the diffusers trap heat. LED’s are designed to run just above room temperature. If they get hotter than that, the lose output and efficiency.(This heat build up will also cause LED failure)

Third, the white plastic scatters light. If the light fixtures are mounted up high, fixtures can scatter light on the ceiling or off to the side onto the upper portion of the walls. Here the light gets trapped in the upper portion of the ceiling cavity and is wasted. The light never gets down to floor level where it can be useful.

Opaque white diffusers are for applications where you want to scatter the light so you can put fixtures further apart. However, in a typical shop lighting application, you are putting in about 100 foot-candles of light; And to get that level of light requires enough light fixtures that they will be close enough automatically.
